First of all, let me state that I abandoned my Matilda BP (60+ % win rate and my standard tilly 52% WR) because I could not bear not having zero control over the battle.  The battle just seemed to come to me regardless of which direction I had travelled. The trouble is it could arrive at the front or the rear all dependant on how well my team performed. Sometimes the battle simply arrived on my doorstep too late and I'd be swamped by KVs from the front and BT7s from the rear. I seldom ever made it to the encounter point of the battle. It was almost always best to sit back and hope that the dregs of the enemy would be in such bad condition that my pew pew 6pdr/2pdr would be enough to finish them off.

Unfortunately, more often than not it seemed as if my delayed absence from the centre of the main battle would be the decisive act in all the battles lost.

As a result the Matilda, like carrion seems to pick up the left-overs of the battle or be swamped by a wave of unstoppable enemies.

I don't like battles that swing one way or another, I like my battles balanced, I like the games to be hard-fought and consistent, I like to win despite a determined resistance. I hate ROFLstomps.  In the Matilda, by your mere presence you almost cause swings one way or the other, lots of losses, then lots of wins. I hated it and I hated being so ruddy slow!

Nevertheless it takes a good pic! Outside my pub.

So, on with how to play it.

It seems the way to play this tank is to have a hefty wedge of gold rounds ready for that deluge of half-dead KVs. Find a hull-down position in a depression, behind a bush and pew-pew at their weakspots. That's quite obvious I suppose. Try not to use gold on all targets or you'll waste a lot of that hard-earned silver... The gun is not so good for tracking having no useful HE round, so go for penetrations on the sides or on the front, flat bits of your incoming enemies, knowing the weakness points of your likely adversaries is always a boon. Kill the weaker tanks first to reduce the amount of fire that will pour upon you. This gun can penetrate everything at its own tier, it can also penetrate most tanks in the tier above, even many tier VIs will be penetrated by the 2pdr with the LittleJohn adapter. APCR will assist in penetrating the really hard targets. The damage inflicted per shot is not great but the rate of fire is formidable and can seriously weaken any enemythat can be taken unaware.

The armour on the Matilda is good but do not depend upon it. All enemy tanks will switch to gold ammo as soon as they target you so you will find you are penned just as regularly as other less well-armoured tanks. Just bask in the knowledge that it costs your enemies a lot more to defeat you! The gun depression is very good and that in combination with three inches of turret armour will allow you to take advantage of a hull down position. Find a fold in the ground in order to survive!

Modules? The medium tank gun rammer is a good addition as you'll need all the DPM you can muster. Some say this is not required as you can load faster than you can aim but I find that in the final battle, the one that is likely to be fought close at hand, any increase in DPM is very useful. Getting that final shot in just before the KV can kill you is always good.

Binoculars and camouflage are necessary for base camping. I do suggest base camping for this tank, relax and have a picnic, blacklist any that complain about your camping style. Offer them tea.

Platoons of Matildas can issue a barrage of fire but do not expect a platoon to automatically win you a game. Despite a deluge of fire, if picked upon by determined enemies, they will die easily and quickly. Even if they succeed they will often be out of position and unable to affect the course of the game. A platoon of tillies on your team can result in an instaloss.

Skills? For a camping tank, camouflage for all your crew, sixth sense, recon, eagle eye, snap shot. I always go for skills first as they work cumulatively as you progress toward 100%. The only exception to this, is the commander's perk, sixth sense, an essential attribute for the commander and the first you should aim for. Instead of selecting it immediately go for a skill such as camouflage first and as soon as you make it to 100% drop it instead for the  sixth sense perk, then go for camouflage again.

You will lose a lot, be prepared. Most likely you will be dissatisfied and you will sell this tank - or you simply won't play it. Please don't say you have good win rates in it, we ALL have good win rates with it - but it is still the only tank that most of us would sell just to avoid having to play it, it is SO slow. "The grind within the grind", it is just too painful to bear.

Standard mode battles encounter or assault, the only assault the Matilda is suited to, is one complete with a regiment of infantry where the grunts can keep it company and look after it. An infantry tank like the Matilda has no place on a WoT battlefield but some really do love the thing. I love them too. Tillies are sweet and lovely, just no good against KVs and the like.

The Matilda is not one of the tanks that you retreat to when your account is being nerfed (remember all those bad teams during that losing streak? ). The tank is good for a 52%+ win rate in the correct hands but when the MM puts you into the one of the pools of poor quality players whilst pitting you against well-skilled teams, can it carry the game? No it can't. More often than not even it will suffer when the MM is against you. Expect the usual win rate loss streaks as this tank cannot be relied to change the outcome of a long term MM 'nerf'.
