World of Tanks Guide to playing the Cruiser MkIV PDF Print
(5 votes)

The Cruiser MKIV is one of my favourite tanks and it can be a lot of fun to play. Does it need a buff? No. Well it could have a speed buff so it matches its real-life counterpart that could reach speeds up to 30mph (50kmh), could accelerate well and zip around the battlefield especially with its speed governer removed.

In some ways it is one of the most over-powered tanks of its tier being fast, reasonably stealthy and packing a damage-dealing gun. The gun to choose is the 40mm Bofors quick-firing cannon. Having this gun changes the tank into a real brawler. It can't take damage but it can dish it out before the enemy has time to react.

The 2pdr gun is the gun of choice by many especially those that want long range sniping capability. The standard 2pdr will provide this but it prevents the Cruiser IV from being the damage-inflicting beast it can become. When an enemy heavy is spotted at long distance and you are in a good position to throw 2 lbs of fast-moving tungsten at the enemy armour then the 2pdr is a good choice. If you prefer stand-off play like this then the 2pdr is the better weapon selection. As you have played the preceding Cruiser MkIII at tier II previously, many will have learnt that the 2pdr is a fantastic weapon that can defeat the armour of almost any enemy tank. It is not quite the same tank killer at tier III but it is still a good gun.

Using it though misses the point of the Cruiser IV. That Bofors can inflict 4 shells in two bursts of rapid fire with similar penetration levels to the 2pdr as long as they are fired at close range. The gun is let down by its poor performance at distance so you will really want to avoid long range fire. Shell dispersion is considerable and the shell's armour penetration performance drops off rapidly. At long distances you won't even register a hit. Don't waste the ammo.

Equipped with this short-range gun, you should be able to easily resist the temptation of firing long distances into empty space and with such restrained behaviour the Cruiser IV can become a good passive spotter. It can move into a spotting position easily using folds of cover and with its reasonable speed it can get to a chosen location in a stealthy fashion. Map awareness is a critical skill that the player needs to develop when using the Cruiser IV in spotting/scouting mode. It isn't a skill that can be bought...

If you are discovered, then the tank can inflict punishment on any enemy that closes to investigate or simply move to cover quickly. Be aware though that if the closing tank is a heavy then gold shells will be required, in fact they are required in almost every game as you will always encounter tanks whose armour defeats the Bofor's usual AP shells. Keep a store of the things but try not to use them. The temptation must be resisted as the Bofors fires off four gold shots in rapid succession and that as you know, can be expensive! A slight pause between the first burst and the second burst allows the gun to re-aim reducing dispersion levels.

The best tactic in city maps is to look for opportunities to flank. When a tank is preoccupied with another of your team-mates then pour fire into the enemies flank and retreat to cover. The reload time on the gun is long at six seconds so prepare your cover in order to prevent the enemy from taking advantage of your inability to fire.

In open maps, regardless of the gun carried, it has one outstanding characteristic that can work to its advantage. Gun depression is very good allowing you to use ridge lines and cover to peek out, fire and then pull back in short order. Use this characteristic to harass, annoy and defeat the enemy. Shooting down on the enemy from hills is a tactic that works, find the hill, take it and use it to your advantage.

Artillery is a potent enemy, the tank can be one-shotted or severely damaged by most arty it encounters, be arty-aware, relocate when spotted and if you don't have sixth sense assume you are about to be targetted at any time.

The Cruiser MKIV equipped with the Bofors can carry a match, it is possible, although its weak armour makes it difficult to absorb incoming fire. A few well-placed enemy shots will remove it from the game. Do not depend upon its armour to carry, only the Bofors with its quick rate of fire, can do that.

liberty12-300.pngThe Cruiser IV carries the 27 litre Liberty V-12 engine that, in a tank this light allows it to accelerate well and maintain a good top speed. It is not quite as fast as its BT2 cousin being heavier but it is still quick enough. The combination of great gun and speed make this a good, mobile fighting weapon. It is a flanker and a spotter and as such should avoid face-to-face confrontation whenever possible. Use it to locate and surprise the enemy but remove yourself from the point of battle when they seem to be targetting or closing in specifically on you. The Cruiser IV has enough power to move itself swiftly and relocate when required, however, it is not a fast light tank so don't attempt to rush out and scout with any great success.

Note: the Cruiser IV is a reasonable passive scout when equipped with a crew who list camouflage as one of their main skills. Using it this way when bottom tier (most of the time) is the main method of influencing a game.

Modules? camouflage net, binoculars and coated optics, the latter of which makes it a good spotter when on the move.

binos-and-camo.jpg

Commander: sixth sense, camouflage, mentor, recon,  jack of all trades.
Gunner: camouflage,  intuition, designated target, snapshot.
Driver: camouflage, clutch braking, off-road driving, preventative maintenance.

I always go for skills first as they work cumulatively as you progress toward 100%. The only exception to this, is the commander's perk, sixth sense, an essential attribute for the commander and the first you should aim for. Instead of selecting it immediately go for a skill such as camouflage first and as soon as you make it to 100% drop it instead for the  sixth sense perk, then go for camouflage again.

Some say you will never achieve such a four-skilled crew on a low tier vehicle and that you should move up to tiers above. I disagree with this. I have higher tier vehciles with the same first class multi-skilled crews but when the going gets tough, the Cruiser MkIV with a good crew is essential to defeat not just your in-game enemies but also the Matchmaker. You see plenty of higher tier matches in this tank and most of the time you will be at the bottom of the pile. Those skills are essential for this tank to be a real-performer.

The Cruiser IV can be one of the tanks that you retreat to when your account is being nerfed (remember all those bad teams during that losing streak? ). The tank is good for a 60%+ win rate in the correct hands but when the MM puts you into the one of the pools of poor quality players whilst pitting you against well-skilled teams, can it carry the game? Yes it can, sometimes. More often than not though even it will suffer when the MM is against you. Expect the usual win rate loss streaks as this tank cannot be relied to change the outcome of a long term MM 'nerf' especially as you will appear in bottom tier games 70% of the time.

Is the tank fun to play? Yes. Does it meet higher tier tanks, yes it does, a lot! Is it still a good tank at higher tiers? Yes, even then it is.

What is the Cruiser MkIVs worst enemy? The Pz1c. It will chew you up in seconds.

The next tank in the line is the Covenanter. You can find that guide here.

The above video is the closest we will come to a video on the Cruiser IV, it mentions the Cruiser III but in reality the Cruiser IV was the same tank, it was simply an up-armoured version of the Cruiser III with the spaced armour giving it that familiar angled appearance to the turret.

cruiser-iv-10-kills-650.jpg

Fig 5.0 I'm not particularly proud of this as it was a cruel bit of seal-clubbing but it shows you what can be done in a Cruiser IV.

Is this tank still in my garage?  YES. Should it be a keeper for you? Well, you will decide that - but my suggestion is that you should keep it, you may need it.
