virtuemart child products - a feature that really needs a complete revamp

I have to state that the stock control features of Virtuemart 1.0/1.1
are the ONE area that really needs a complete revamp. The concept of
having to create child products for each variation of a product is

completely nuts. I am not saying that to be nasty I promise... I just
lost a web development job creating a shop on the basis of the
complexity and counter-intuitiveness of the stock control system.

The client laughed in my face when I told them what needed to be done.
They have 30 size attributes for each of their clothing products, then a
variety of colours and fastenings. They would have to have thousands of
child items in their database and it would grind to a halt before it
could be used as a functioning shop. I am pretty sure that the effect of
doing things in this way in Virtuemart was completely misunderstood when
the child method was first coded/implemented. I certainly don't know of
any other cart that works this way.

If I was a coder of the stature of Soeren (the VM developer) I would
offer my services to help resolve this part of Virtuemart. Unfortunately
I am not. All I can do now is to state how terribly important it is to
sort this bit of Virtuemart before Virtuemart can be taken seriously as
a shopping cart solution. VM does SO much and then it falls flat on it's
face on an area that is considered fundamental.

Virtuemart has had changes to allow it to be themed and other
'nice-to-haves' but could the team not focus on giving us the core
'essentials'. I do not know how to offer my contribution as I am not a
programmer - but if it takes a bit of cash to create a core component,
could VM not set up a pledge system and take contributions, if people
want the component so much then they can show how keen they are by
contributing a few quid/dollars/euros.

Don't get me wrong I still think VM is the best component for Joomla.
Can I ask is a complete revamp of the stock control system on the
roadmap for the next major version of Virtuemart? It has to be.
