Migrating is always a problem, if you go with Joomla 1.6 you run the
risk of encountering potential bugs before anyone else does, then you
have to wait for fixes to be developed. Note that Joomla 1.5 has 22
iterations and counting... Also, the majority of extensions won't be
Joomla 1.6 native for a long while. The downside of not going for Joomla
1.6 is that when Joomla 1.6 gets going and all development focus shifts
in that direction, your old Joomla 1.5 sites will be increasingly more
difficult to maintain, extensions will continue to develop but not for
Joomla 1.5. You will eventually be forced to upgrade to Joomla 1.6 or be
left behind. I was in that position with Joomla 1.0 and I still have
sites in Joomla 1.0 which the clients don't want to upgrade. Who bears
the cost, you or the client? is this an important consideration for you?
Bear in mind an upgrade is not easy as each and every extension needs to
be migrated too. These are things to seriously think about before
creating a new website in Joomla 1.5.
The word is that Joomla 1.6 is not going to take over from Joomla 1.5 as Joomla 1.5 is a long term release which will be supported until April 2012.
Joomla will be going through a six month release cycle which means we should experience Joomla 1.7 before the next long term release of Joomla 1.8. Interersting to note is that Joomla 1.8 should start to appear around the same time that J1.5 comes off support.
To quite a Joomla Ace from the forums, "I intend to sit this out with the pop corn until J1.8 LTR..."
