When you have a coupon code that gives a free price to an item and it is
the only thing in the virtuemart cart then paypal will refuse to process
it even though it may have a non-zero postage cost.
I know this may be an obvious interim solution but...
I have items of £14.99 in my shop with coupon codes available to
discount by same amount. This causes the zero amount problem where
Paypal rejects your payment as the price is zero. If you want Paypal to
accept the payment all you need to do is decrease the coupon discount
by 0.01 to £14.98 then your item will have a price of just £0.01. Paypal
will now accept it. As long as your item has additional postage, then
you can reduce it accordingly to something like 1.99, then the item cost
can be absorbed into the postage and it does not look ridiculous
charging just £0.01. You can easily explain the limitations of the cart
on a content item explaining how the coupon system works. We are giving
away small jewellery items and the cost of the postage just covers the
actual cost of the jewellery...Customer gets what appears to be a
virtually free item and is happy to pay a small amount for postage. We
get to clear some old stock. We are all happy.
