sound problems?

Igor,

The sound problems are nomally caused by the machine that is playing the sounds. The widget only uses system resources to play the sounds. Problems can be:

1. System running slowly due to resource issues, cpu running out.
2. Strange audio codecs installed that interrupt the playing of a sound trying to process it (this is the most common problem)
3. Some other weird sound configuration issue on the system.

re: hanging, I run Google Chrome on win XP and no problems with the widgets. I have plenty of memory a big pagefile and an o/s that doesn't consume too much memory.

Win7 is a heavy memory drain, Google chrome creates a process per window and it sounds as if it might be resource issue. If you look at the processes in task manager you will see a yahoo widget process for each widget, same for google chrome processes, too many processes might well be the issue. PS CS3/5 doesn't use too much in the way of process resources and is not a big user of memory until you open up a heavily layered PSD file.

Not heard of anyone having issues with win7 but if you have another PC anywhere without win7 you could try them there and see if it is any more stable for you. If that proves to be so then you can start thinking about what the differences are between the configs. of the two machines and perhaps narrow it down

For the widget engine to die it normally takes a serious issue. Try running with just one widget at a time. See if it still happens, then load another, note system resource usage and see what the state of the system is when this occurs. It might be that your system is using too much memory and you have an insufficient pagefile.

The widget toolbar location is configurable and it can auto-hide, mine is on the left hand side.

Basically a WIN PC can be heavily configured with othjer software which can take its toll on other apps. You'll need to do an analysis and probably run the widgets on a vanilla win7 install to diagnose which of your apps/configurations have disturbed normal operation.

With the many thousands of installations so far, no-one has mentioned as similar error before. The sound you might be able to fix and it points to an audio code issue. Try removing codecs one by one.

Thank you very much for your widgets, they are all amazing! But I got diasppointed due to some problems with the sound on Steampunk Clock Calendar. The chimes occasionally get distorded and sound like a jammed tape in old tape recorders. The widgets also tend to turn off once Google Chrome is launched or something else is done with the desktop. Sometimes the sound on Steampunk Clock Calendar totally disappears. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate on Sony Vaio VPCEB1M1R laptop. Please also note that I am using three widgets together - Clock Calender, Weather and Calendar - and the sound disappears on Clock Calendar only. Another thing is that the yahoo widget bar itself is hiidden at the rigt corner of the screen since I set it so at the very beginning, and it does not want to appear again for me to make settings, but instead turns off to close all the widgets at the moment I even just put the cursor arrow on it without clicking. First I thought that the problem might be due to memory or processor, but everything is ok when I launch Photoshop wihich requires pretty much resources. So to my mind three things are somehow interconnected to produce conflicts - yahoo widget service itself, sounds on Clock Calander, Windows desktop service and Google Chrome. Please advise your comments on this. I like your widgets so much and want to fix those problems. Kind regards, Igor. - Igor

cute clock, but...

I really love steampunk, and maybe I am not working this thing right but none of the settings register with the clock. it won't shrink, chime, tick or swing as far as I can tell. It doesn't switch between analog and digital either. Cute idea, let me know if it's me and not the clock, thanks! - CaraC

Real Fun Widget but its not yet completed!

a real fun widget but I note that I'm not the only person who never reads the instructions "til' all else fails" :) The preferences indicate which bits work and which don't. The widget is work in progress and I hope he does get round to completing it. Version 8 has the pendulum working. - Peter

Hi Dean, very nice "tool"... a little request... could you clean the belltoll sample from its noise (maybe it's due to the resolution of the original sample)? Thanks a lot for this relaxing clock. - audiogani/Piero

frobert November 29, 2010 · version 0.1 Really liked it but...

After turning the tic toc on,I was unable to turn it off After trying everything at least 4 times I decided to dump it and reload.Same issue happened again and also no pendulem,I will let it go away for now, check the comments for a fix and hope to use this clock in the future.

EDIT: Another version has been submitted for approval, 0.12 and will be here shortly as soon as Yahoo approve it. Version 0.12 has some time-changing functionality to the slider. I wasn't able to duplicate the tic toc issue that frobert had. Hopefully you will have more luck with the next version.

Waiting for the alarms, now :)

Chimes are all clean now, thanks and the whole clock is taking its final functionality goal.
I usually use it hidden to hear only chimes and I open its window only when I need to set it leaving the whole screen clean from gadgets.

EDIT: I have created 0.13, added a new pop-up techno-goth screen, currently only shows debug information but may do more later. Also changed a few things, Clicking on bell now sets alarm, clicking on clock face now turns off alarm, a good clunk sound now assigned to various events, help file created. It should turn up as soon as it is approved. The yahoo chaps are releasing them very quickly so you shouldn't have to wait long. - audiogani/Piero

If you want to step a bit away from total technology and have something that looks and sounds like a clock on your wall or sitting on your desk, choose this one!

Beautiful, luxurious layout, flexible with sounds, sound volume, choosing a pendulum or not, choosing digital or analog, this is a treat, in short.

This clock looks like an early invention by the brilliant doctor in the movie "Time Machine". (NOTE: it does NOT look like the Time Machine....just looks like something the good Doctor might invent!)

If you like old fashioned things, you'll love this one. - nobodyz

It's the sound files that make this fantastic!

Over the past week I've fallen completely in love with this widget because of the sounds! Both the chimes and the pendulum 'tock" have an organic, faintly echoing sound that fills my house with the peaceful tranquility of an old, Victorian grandfather clock. And what the heck...it tells time too!
There's another Yahoo widget that mimics the sounds of a grandfather clock - and it's vary well done, but this one's just a bit better.
Can't wait for further updates to round out the functionality. Thanks!

EDIT: - Faellyn, really glad you like it - A new version (0.15) has been submitted to the Yahoo team for approval. The alarm is 80% complete and behind the scenes the alarm code has been largely finished. Some UI changes have been made to make the alarm system more usable. The next version (0.16) will probably have the alarm finished. Until then it is for demo purposes only, so everyone please reduce your expectations. There are some new sounds and some new pop-ups. 0.15 will be here soon, then 0.16 to finish the alarms, have fun! - Faellyn

Chimes are deactivated at start

Hello Dean, I downloaded the 0.15 version from your site and chimes deactivate themselves at the clock start even if I set them on and save the preferences, close and reopen the clock.
Thanks for this wonderful clock!

EDIT: Piero, you are quite right about the chime deactivating on startup, thanks for pointing that out. I will fix it. 0.16 has the alarm working and more changes to the UI.Added onMouseEnter events to the till pop-ups and coloured them red to indicate there exists the danger of deleting alarms.
Added dropdown sounds to the canvases.
fixed a few minor bugs with the UI.
Added the deletion of alarms by clicking on the till pop up.
Clapper moves when bell rings on setting an alarm.
Checked the alarm rais…ing mechanism functions.
Added sounds to the spinning counters.

Will load the new version here as soon as it is tested - audiogani/Piero

Instead of having a low/high volume button, I think on/off would be better. I don't want to dig into the settings whenever I'm watching a video or playing a game

EDIT: Duy, I'll see what I can do about providing a volume on/off from the front end. I hear what you are saying. - Duy

This has to be the coolest clock/calendar widget that I have come across. The pop-out canvases, the indicator slider, the sounds...everything about this thing is brillant as well as brillantly done. The tick-tock, the chimes, and the alarm are all clear and very bright. Like so many comments that I have read below, I too also have the sound on with the volume set to run these sounds softly int he background. The design actualy reminds me of the feel of the current TARDIS.

To round this …one out, i would follow it up with a set of matching monitors for the CPU RAM, HD space(multiples), Wifi, Network, and Battery power. Same feel, with fancey arrow-sliders or a set of old fashioned gauges. Add that idea to your calender and your nixies and you would then have a true steampunk desktop. - Edward
