Weather reporting the steampunk way!

This is our steampunk contribution to weather reporting. The Steampunk weather widget is based on the Digistation widget written by: Bogdan Irimia, enhanced and steampunked by Dean Beedell with kind permission of Bogdan.

Note: This widget will continue to be supported regardless of the current state of yahoo widget engine support. It runs in XP/Vista/Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS/X.

New version 1.0.8 - The widget has been given a completely new steampunk outer skin and some new functionality.

As well as a reskin a twenty-four hour clock has been added to the circumference of the weather gauge . Other minor changes include: Changed all the calculations of the pointer angles to use simpler calculations saving cpu time; separated the .kon file and .js; animated the pointers to count down on startup; added code to allow widget to be resized; fixed some translations ; changed the default location to London Heathrow; added 'vitality' to the dock icon, animated the temperature gauge switch-over, added sounds to the main functions.

Latest version includes the following changes :

This widget works with Windows XP SP3, it has been tested on Vista, Windows 7 / 8 and Mac OS/X as long as the Yahoo Widget runtime engine is loaded.

I could find NO city anywhere that it works in.

EDIT: Alan, please do some checking before leaving reviews. This widget takes it's feeds from a website that puts out hundreds of weather feeds form all around the world. If you use your noggin it is easy to get temperatures for your part of the world. I can get London heathrow or London Gatwick easily enough. As long as there is a feed near you then it will display the weather for you. As Edward said, search for major airports. They often have a weather feed.

Actually I had no problem finding a location. Many of them are at Airports so you might want to try that way. I figure that if it can find Manhatten Regional Airport in the middle of KS, it can find others elsewhere.

So far the widget has been running wonderfully.

Once you get past the difficulty of finding your city, the widget looks great and works like its supposed to. I kinda wish the temperature and humidity were easier to read. Unless you make the widget full size, you can't read them at all. Love the style and the glass like dome is very nicely done. Can't wait to see what else you come up with!

and a diagram of all the parts and their function would be nice too. I'm still not sure what all the parts do! Is the outside rim supposed to be a clock?

EDIT: Quite right! - I am in the process of documenting the whole thing and improving it. Hold tight - it is on the way!

I love the look of this and your other gadgets. Please keep creating more with this theme. I just started using it so I won't leave a review. I do have a few questions though.

Would it be possible to have the temperature gauge be the largest and therefore easiest to read? That is typically what I am most interested in.

Also, is there a way to link this with more locations? My city wasn't included and I had to choose a larger city nearby, which isn't always experiencing the same weather.

EDIT: I'll have a think about allowing the different gauges to be selected as the main gauge - a lot of work though! The data is provided by Metar stations (airports and suchlike) It can only use data from such feeds.

METAR is a format for reporting weather information. A METAR weather report is predominantly used by pilots in fulfillment of a part of a pre-flight weather briefing, and by meteorologists, who use aggregated METAR information to assist in weather forecasting. Raw MET…AR is the most popular format in the world for the transmission of weather data. It is highly standardized through International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which allows it to be understood throughout most of the world.

Choose a location near you that has an airport, possibly name the airport rather than the city.

By the way, a new version is on the way that will make it easier to select a city.

Title: A wonderful looking additon for my computational engine

However the weather mechanism seems to need the application of computational cards that will allow an influx of information regarding weather stations in England. Or perhaps it is my inexperience with such machines that stops the mechanism gathering information from England.

EDIT: Weather stations in England catered for in Great Britain and the world...

@Jonathon - The widget uses METAR which is a format for reporting weather information. A METAR weather report is predominantly used by pilots in fulfillment of a part of a pre-flight weather briefing and by meteorologists who use aggregated METAR information to assist in weather forecasting. It is available from large airports so if you have one nearby, just right click, change location and type in the airport name, for example: Gatwick or Heathrow.

This and your clock calendar are now on my Mac. Never even saw yahoo widgets before I saw these. Goes great with my homemade steampunked Coca Cola wallpaper. will spread the word!

Title: temp and humidity gauges too small

I like it but I just can't read the temp and humidity gauges. The numbers are too small on my 1280x800 display at 96 dpi.

EDIT: @squarepegger - I will test the gauge fonts in slightly bigger form and see how that works. It isn't easy as the gauge is created in big form first to look as real as possible, then shrunk down, the font naturally looks quite small but the result is very realistic. As a workaround if you hover over the gauges it will show you a pop-up that states the humidity and temperatures in text. I will also see what I can do to make the widget resize to a larger size overall in the next version.

I love the look and feel of the widget but, however, I am having trouble getting it to recognise my city. Does this only work for places in the UK?

EDIT: @Californiagothgirl1981 - the widget gets weather information from airports, try the nearest airport to your location. Read the instructions here which will help.

Thanks, I'll wait for the update. If it works without that ting sound, it will be perfect.

It would be even better if it could get info from all cities that Yahoo Weather uses, too... but I imagine that could be difficult.

Erik, it currently gets the weather sources from http://vremea.meteoromania.ro/metar/EGLL/EN but the actual weather reports come from airports near you. If you find a local airport then it should reflect the weather in your area. Regarding the control for muting, I may add a little drop-down chain for you to pull.

I love this barometer! I want to keep it on my computer but ever since installing it I hear a "Ting!" about every 15 minutes without a setting to turn it off. It doesn't even mark the full quarters but appears to go off randomly.
Is it indeed this widget that tings, and how do I mute it? Thanks!

EDIT: @erik - I have only just added the sounds to the latest version and it makes this sound when it refreshes the data, just to let you know. I haven't added the controls to turn off or mute the sounds yet but will do so when I have decided what type of front end control to add. I prefer to have a real steampunk control do the action rather than a back-end menu option so hold on a while whilst I come up with the first version.

great work! Can I disable the "ding" and I cannot get data from cities in British Columbia Canada which makes it unusable. any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Craig.

EDIT: Craig, the ding happens when the widget gets data from the chosen source, it indicates that the widget is doing something. Likle all good steampunk machines, it makes a sound every now and then. The widget is in its first release and sound control has not yet been added.

If you read the instructions here: http://lightquick.co.uk/instru...gauge.html then yo'll see that you have to choose a location near you and it needs to be a location providing weather information. Try a nearby airport.
