Steampunk CPU/GPU Thermometer Ya

cpu-gpu-thermometers.pngThis widget uses Speedfan to obtain temperature information. Why is Speedfan needed? The answer is that the Windows operating system is meant to provide an interface to the motherboard and other components to provide system temperature information. Unfortunately, Windows does not yet do its job as there seems to be no stable hardware specification for hardware manufacturers to provide  temperature sensors. All the hardware manufacturers do their own thing. The end result is that it is impossible for a widget to get the temperatures from all the myriad different types of PC components in the world, so we have to resort to third party applications that can do it pretty well. The best of the bunch is a good piece of software called Speedfan. Speedfan is pretty good at extracting temperatures for almost all PC hardware so it is a fundamental requirement for Speedfan to be installed on your Windows PC for this widget to function.

Get Speedfan here: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Installation Instructions

This Widget will install and run on your Windows XP/Win7 system and the thermometers will return valid temperatures. Although this version of the widget will install on Mac OS/X it will not return any valid temperature information. A later version of the widget will work on the Mac OS/X operating system.

You will  need Yahoo widgets for this widget to run. Get Yahoo widgets here.  yahoo-widgets-logo.png This widget is written in Javascript and XML which is used by the Yahoo widget runtime engine. This widget is capable of running under the Yahoo widget engine only.

Download Yahoo widgets and install it. You must have Yahoo widgets installed in order to run the widget as that is how it has been designed. Yahoo widgets is the runtime engine that allows these widgets to be displayed. Yahoo Widgets does unfortunately come with a load of non-Steampunk widgets already installed that you must remove if you want an uncluttered steampunk desktop. However, removal of these is easily done, a simple right click on each and then "delete widget" is sufficient to uninstall each until all the non-steampunk widgets are removed.

Download the thermometer widget from LQ here: http://lightquick.co.uk/downloads/steampunk-cpu-gpu-temperature-monitor-yahoo-widget.html

When Yahoo widgets has been installed, it will detect that a new widget has been downloaded and it will install it automatically.

Startup

On Windows XP Speedfan will be started and minimised straight away. On Win 7/Vista you may have to minimise Speedfan manually the first time it runs. This is due to the bug where NT6 restricts access to Speedfan's installation folder meaning that the widget cannot write to configuration files in order to automatically minimise Speedfan. When Speedfan is started by the widget there will be a wait for 15-20 seconds whilst Speedfan interrogates all the sensors. When this is done it will start to show the temperatures.

Instructions for use (for 1.0.2 only)

The temperatures of your CPU/GPU are indicated by the level of the red alcohol (some still refer to it as mercury) on each thermometer. The thermometer has a number of graphical controls. Each has a separate function described below and indicated in the schematic on the left. You can identify the function of each working component by hovering the mouse over each. A pop-up will show giving you a description.

soundsgroup.png The widget has its own set of sounds that make the thermometer widget unique and humourous. These sounds are not always required steam.pngwhen you are listening to music or any other program with its own sounds. You can mute the thermometer by turning off the sounds from the back end. Occasionally the widget will let off a little 'steam', to turn this off just click on the valve.pngsteam valve to tighten the valve and stop the steam from ejecting.
cpu-gauge.png The cpu gauge will show the current cpu usage at regular tskmgr.pngintervals incorporating all cpus. If you hover over the cpu gauge a thumbnail of task manager will pop up. Clicking on this gauge will activate the Windows task manager or will show a process activity list.

mem-gauge.png
perfmon.pngThe mem gauge will show the current physical memory usage at regular intervals. If you hover over the cpu gauge a thumbnail of the performance monitor utility will pop up. Clicking on this gauge will activate the Windows Performance Monitor or will show an i/o activity list.
 leftTemperatureMax.png

The maximum temperature reached by the thermometer is shown by the metal index that floats above the mercury level. Click and slide to reposition it.

righthottext.png To set the alarms you simply slide the warm and hot slider settings to adjust the alarms to appropriate temperatures for your particular laptop. Click on each  slider and slide toredLampFlashing.png adjust. The user defined slider positions will be saved in future versions. When the temperature exceeds the setting for the warm slider the amber alarm will flash. When the temperature exceeds the setting for the hot slider the red alarm will flash and the bell alarm will sound.

To silence the alarm, simply click on the bell. The clapper will move away from the bell indicating the alarm setting is off. This can also be set at the back end in Widget Preferences.

The sampling interval is 5-6 seconds, move the ovalSlider.pngoval slider on the time selector to reduce the sampling interval and increase the frequency of updates. This can also be set at the back end in Widget Preferences.

Cranking the handle on the bottom right will cause the printer to unfold. This will display a chart of the temperatures over the time the widget has been running. Crank the handle again and the printer will fold up again. This function can also be set at the back end in Widget Preferences.
 gpuscribe.png

The printer scribes move up and down corresponding to the current temperature. The CPU scribe is highlighted with a capital C. The GPU with a capital G. The scribes are not yet fully working in this beta version.

hToggle.png Clicking on the H toggle will display the drop down help canvas.
 sToggle.png

Clicking on the S toggle will take you straight to the Speedfan site to download Speedfan.

rtoggle.png Clicking on the R will restart Speedfan.
mtoggle.png Clicking on the M toggle will mute the sound
redLampFlashing.png gettingSpeedfan.pngIf the widget starts and fails to find speedfan it will ring a warning bell and pop up this warning message. Clicking on the message plaque will open the browser at Speedfan's download page. The centre warning light will also flash red.
scaleswitchcent.pngscaleswitch.png Use the following switches to select  fahrenheit or centigrade scales.

thermometers-backend.jpgThere is now code behind the steampunk thermometer  that allows the yahoo widget to be resized. It can now be made significantly smaller than the standard large size and it looks rather sweet in small form. Not everything will work after a resize though! - this is a beta! The widget can only be resized at the back end in Widget Preferences

Sensor Selecting Menu - NT5 Windows XP family systems only

thermometers-XPmenu.jpg

If you perform a right click on the widget it will pop up a drop down menu. The menu is context-sensitive so if you right click when on the thermometer body more options will appear. These are the alternative sensors that can be used by the thermometer. By default one of the sensors will be pre-selected by the program logic that determines the best one to use.

Typically, a number of sensors are shown, the image to the left shows some typical sensors:

Sensor 1 GPU sensor (assuming Nvidia)
Sensor 2-3 Hard discs (assuming 2 hard discs)
Sensor 4 Temp 1 - unidentified functioning ACPI sensor (probably motherboard)
Sensor 5 CPU core 1
Sensor 6 CPU core 2 (could be as many as four)
Sensor 7 GPU sensor read through Nvidia control panel (should be the same as sensor 1)
Sensor 8 unidentified non-functioning sensor

Your menu will be different according to the hardware in your machine.

The menu allows you to select any sensor manually by clicking and selecting the sensor of choice. When the new sensor is chosen it will refresh with the new temperature values within 5 seconds time. If the frequency interval is shorter then it will refresh much quicker. The chosen senscrank.pngor name will also be displayed at the top of the thermometer. The above only applies to XP.

Sensor Selecting Menu - NT6 Windows Vista/7 family systems only

menu.png

NT6 derived systems such as Windows 7 and Vista do not speedfan.jpgallow access to the files that are needed to determine the sensor names. So, instead of identifying the sensors the menu shows you a list of the sensors, un-named.

If you want to manually identify which sensor is which, the easiest way is to maximise speedfan for a short while and view the current sensor names. The first is typically the GPU, the second and third are hard drives (if you have two), the cpu cores are normally the sensors toward the end of the list.

Sometimes, well-intended improvements to Windows end up as a pain to the poor user. This security 'improvement' in NT6 has caused the problem that cannot be worked around until the Speedfan developer puts his config files in a different folder. Sorry!

Sensor Title Menu  Vista/Windows 7 users only

menu.png

As the widget cannot determine the name of the sensor on an NT6 system from the information provided by speedfan you'll need to change the thermometer title yourself. This is the title at the top of the thermometer. Simply right-click crank.pngon the title and you will be presented with a drop down that allows you to select from a list the appropriate sensor titles. This function is not required for XP so it is disabled for XP users.

Note: this menu just changes the name, nothing else, it does not select a different sensor. Use the Sensor Selecting Menu above to do that.

Run-time Problems

On Windows XP - the widget can determine the sensor names and will return the correct temperature for CPU and GPU (this work is underway). However, on NT6 systems (win 7 and Vista) it can't be done. So, on Vista and Windows 7 the temperatures returned will initially be that of the GPU and one other 'unknown' sensor. The widget will do its best to determine the correct one. We cannot currently guarantee it is the CPU temperature as NT6 does not allow you to read the Speedfan installation folder where the information is stored. Also, due to the nature of the Speedfan API, Speedfan does not return the names of sensors but only the temperature values. This is really annoying as it means we can nver be sure which temperature we are returning. At the moment the widget will do its best to guess and in any case the widget gives you the functionality to decide which sensor to use. In the long term the developer of Speedfan will almost certainly be making changes to improve his program and enable the above functionality. We will just have to wait a while longer until he does this. Sorry!

How does the Widget work?

You can think of the widget as a skin to speedfan. The widget takes advantage of Speedfan's API to provide temperature information from all the sensors on your machine. The widget javascript code cannot directly access this information so we use a small c++ program called speedfanreader.exe to get the information directly from the Speedfan application. Speedfan needs to be installed and running in order for this to work. The source code for the exe is included as part of the package so you can change/recompile the program as required. We used the open source bloodshed C++ compiler/linker to produce our speedfanreader executable. Feel free to use the code yourself.

Reviews

I really hope you enjoy this widget, a lot of work has gone into it and it has given me great pleasure to provide a Steampunk widget that would be usable to a lot of other people. I don't ask for donations but can I please ask you to leave some positive feedback at yahoo widgets? Tens of thousands of people have downloaded and installed this widget but only a very few can be bothered to give feedback. By doing so, you make a lonely developer very happy!

Title: An idea...
How about making the widget to display the highest temperature (and next to it the lowest, maybe) detected by speedfan? Is that possible?
