nixie4-100.pngThe Dieselpunk/Cyberpunk/Steampunk Yahoo nixie tube valve widget has undergone some radical changes in the last few days, the major change is that it works now. Some simple code was extracted from the Steampunk clock/calendar widget and reused to provide the continuously changing time.


mmsblog_00089_01.pngA friend of mine, Harry Whitfield provided the code to continuously
update the time image as it appears in the Yahoo widget dock. He also
rejigged the code to make the tubes appear as objects within a frame
which allows them to be controlled much more easily. The reason Harry
drops his code into mine is to teach me proper programming methods. I
can tell he is frustrated by my old-fashioned methods and the result is
that he is teaching me a lot.

Latest changes include the ability to turn off the provided sounds and
another to enable the two second indicating tubes. It also now resizes
from the back end. Unfinished but it generally works.

Some Steampunk-type people say that Nixie tubes are not quite steampunk
and are more suited to dieselpunk/cyberpunk usage. However, that is not
entirely right, Nixie tubes are conceivably part of the technology that
an advanced Victorian Society might extend themselves to. Thermionic
valves were created in the 1870s and started to find practical
application by the early 1900s so it is not too much of a stretch of the
imagination to see them in use on some Victorian gadgetry. A Nixie tube
is not strictly a thermionic tube but is using the same technology in
cold-cathode mode. Fundamentally the Victorians had tube valve
technology, not widely used but it would be available to them in a pinch.

Although I have put the tubes to use in a clock any recommendations as
to how they might be put to any alternative use would be appreciated.

I have submitted the new nixie tube clock to Yahoo widgets and
Widgipedia and quite a few people have downloaded it already.
